More information in English

One of the busiest and most popular folklore troupes in Havana, Vocal Baobab have their own very individual take on Afro-Cuban chants and rumba. Specialising in choral style arrangements of the traditional spiced up with the odd dash of more contemporary flavours such as rap, hip hop and reggae, their high energy performances are characterised by explosions of virtuoso dance, drumming and vocal improvisation.

.
Singing in Spanish and Yoruban, the seven performers of Vocal Baobab present a repertoire that connects their African roots with the rich and heady cultural mix that is Cuba today, uniting authenticity with current trends. Well represented are the Afro-Cuban chants, which are dedicated to the Afro-Cuban orishas (saints) of the Santeria religions and rumba, which may be said to be the heartbeat of the Cuban people, featuring the daily events of life, love and death. Vocal Baobab bring out the Afro in Cuban music and dance, celebrating the glorious diversity of Afro-Cuban culture.
.
The seven members of Vocal Baobab are also gifted and experienced teachers of Afro-Cuban percussion, chant and dance, as well as Cuban popular dance.
